Recognize the first anniversary, then every five years, and raise the value with tenure. Give a physical item with a short presentation, not a gift card: under IRS rules, a length of service award can be tax free for the employee when it is tangible property, given after the first five years and no more often than every five years.
Why the early years matter
The median employee has been with their current employer 4.1 years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (January 2026). Many people leave before a five year award. A small, well chosen gift at one and three years reaches far more of your team.
A simple structure by milestone
| Milestone | Gift ideas | Typical approach |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | Quarter zip, insulated tumbler, quality notebook | One standard gift for everyone |
| 3 years | Backpack, fleece blanket, insulated cooler bag | One standard gift or a choice of two |
| 5 years | Premium jacket or vest, weekender bag | Choice of three to five items |
| 10 years | Higher end outerwear, leather goods, brand name items | Choice from a small catalog |
| 15 and 20 years | Premium brand items, engraved keepsakes | Choice from a premium catalog |
| 25 years and up | Top tier item plus a personal presentation | Choice plus a moment with leadership |
Set a budget per tier that fits your plan. Many companies raise the amount at each five year step.
The tax rules for service awards
Under IRS rules (Publication 15-B and 26 U.S.C. 274(j)), a length of service award can be excluded from the employee's wages when:
- It is tangible personal property. Cash, gift cards, vacations, meals, event tickets and stocks do not qualify.
- It is given as part of a meaningful presentation.
- The employee has completed at least five years of service, and has not received a length of service award in the same year or the prior four years.
- The value stays within the limits: $400 per employee per year, or $1,600 under a written qualified plan award program.
First and third year gifts fall outside this rule. Keep them low value or treat them as taxable. Confirm your program with your accountant.
Running the program
- Pull anniversary dates from HR monthly and order ahead, so the gift is there on the day.
- Give a choice at five years and up. A gift redemption page lets the employee pick and enter an address.
- Add a card signed by the manager. The note is what people remember.
- Keep the branding quiet on higher tiers. A small logo or an engraved year works best.

Frequently asked questions
- What is a good 5 year work anniversary gift?
- A premium jacket or vest, a weekender bag or a choice of three to five items of similar value, given with a short presentation.
- Are work anniversary gifts taxable?
- Cash and gift cards are always taxable. A tangible length of service award can be tax free after five years of service, no more than once every five years, up to $400 per year or $1,600 under a qualified plan.
- Should we recognize the first work anniversary?
- Yes. With median tenure at 4.1 years, many employees never reach a five year award. A modest first year gift reaches more people.
- How do we manage anniversary gifts across many locations?
- Use one catalog per milestone and a redemption page, so each employee picks a gift and it ships to them.
