How the calculator works

  • Annual turnover is your industry's monthly quits rate times 12, or the annual percent you enter.
  • Expected departures are your headcount times annual turnover.
  • The average cost to replace one employee is your average salary times a blended Gallup share: 40% for frontline, 80% for technical and professional and 200% for leaders, weighted by your role mix.
  • Program cost is headcount times your budget per employee.
  • Break even is the program cost divided by the average replacement cost, rounded up to a whole departure.
  • Each scenario multiplies expected departures by a small reduction (1%, 2% or 5%), then compares the replacement costs saved with the program cost.

Why break even is the headline: no one can promise how many people a program will keep. The break even tells you the smallest result that covers the cost, so you can judge whether it is realistic for your team. The scenarios are illustrations, not a forecast.

Making recognition programs work

  • Tie items to specific moments: milestones, work anniversaries and wins.
  • Give quality items people actually use.
  • Include a personal note from a manager that says what the person did.
  • Be consistent through the year, not only at the holidays.

Plan dates ahead with the recognition calendar, and new hire kits with the onboarding kit planner. For industry figures, see promotional products statistics.
